Auto-generates a printable troubleshooting brief for the Johnson 50HP outboard whenever Ethan starts a boat-engine Claude session, combining his recent diagnostic questions (like the 12V purple/green wire check) with the relevant manual page references. The PDF lands in ~/Tablet/ so it's already on his TCL NXTPAPER when he walks out to the dock — no phone-in-the-bilge fumbling.
Create ~/bin/boat-brief-generate (bash+python). Tail ~/.claude/projects/-home-ethan-boat-engine/*.jsonl for the last 5 user questions, extract electrical/fuel/ignition keywords via simple regex, then use pdftotext + grep on ~/Documents/johnson1972sm7208.pdf to find matching section page numbers. Render an HTML brief (question → manual page refs → wiring diagram excerpt via pdftoppm) and convert to PDF with weasyprint. Drop into ~/Tablet/boat/brief-$(date +%F).pdf so tablet-sync pushes it to the TCL. Add a cron entry that runs after each boat-engine session ends (watch ~/.claude/projects/-home-ethan-boat-engine/ mtime, debounce 5min).
Created the Boat Project Brief Generator:
- **`~/bin/boat-brief-generate`** (95 lines, executable) — Tails latest `~/.claude/projects/-home-ethan-boat-engine/*.jsonl`, pulls last 5 user questions, regex-matches electrical/fuel/ignition/lower-unit/starting keywords, finds matching pages in cached `pdftotext -layout` output of the Johnson manual, renders an HTML brief with `pdftoppm` thumbnails of the top hit pages, prints to PDF via headless Chrome → `~/Tablet/boat/brief-YYYY-MM-DD.pdf`. Manual text is cached at `~/.cache/boat-brief/manual.txt` (rebuilds only if PDF is newer).
- **`~/bin/boat-brief-watch`** (executable) — Debounced trigger: regenerates only when a session jsonl is newer than the last brief AND has been quiet for ≥5 min.
- **Cron entry** — `*/10 * * * * ~/bin/boat-brief-watch` (logs to `~/.cache/boat-brief/cron.log`).
Verified by running the generator end-to-end — produced `~/Tablet/boat/brief-2026-04-27.pdf` (31 KB), which `tablet-sync` will push to the TCL.
